My lesson plan focused on the students analyzing Marvin Gaye's song "What's Going on, Brother?" to John Legend and Common's song "Glory." "What's Going On, Brother?" was written to examine a distraught America in the 1970s that was struggling with the Vietnam War and racial misunderstanding. The song is considered to be "one of the most tuneful works of consciousness-raising in American music." "Glory" was written by John Legend and Common for the 2014 Ava DuVernay film "Selma," a movie based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches.
My concept for the album cover was based on Bob Marley's song "One Love."
My silk includes the Human Rights Logo combines the silhouette of a hand with that of a bird, and a white thumb grabbing the bird.
My stamps included the saying "One Love," an image of "1" and a heart," and a styrofoam of hearts."
My zine focused on comparing ancient literature and past activism to modern literature and modern activism. For example, students in my class compared Sophocles' play "Antigone" to the March For Our Lives youth activists.
